Water always finds the low point of the yard. The question is whether it looks like a drainage problem or like a feature you chose on purpose.
What a dry creek bed does
It is an engineered channel lined with rock, sized to the volume of water the yard produces. The rocks slow the water, the depth carries it, and the bed directs it away from the house and toward a legal discharge point.
What makes one work
- Correct sizing. A channel that is too narrow simply overflows.
- Rock selection. Large stones in the path, smaller gravel at the edges.
- Zero ponding. The fall must be continuous.
Why it looks like a feature
Because the geometry is natural by design, and the material is the landscape. Add mulch, river rock and plantings, and the channel disappears into the design.
A yard that drains well looks intentional.
