When the goal is a beautiful patio, the two most popular options are stamped concrete and pavers. Both can mimic natural stone, brick or slate. The differences show up in the details.
Stamped concrete
- One continuous surface. No sand joints for weeds or ants to move into.
- Fully customizable. Colors, patterns, borders and score lines can be designed to match the house.
- Lower overall cost. Typically the more affordable beautiful option per square foot.
Stamped work has to be placed by a crew that can read the concrete while it is fresh. The pattern is created in a short window of time, and that window does not come back.
Pavers
- Repairable. Drag the sofa, crack a stone, and the individual pieces can be reset.
- The joints behave like expansion joints, which reduces cracking.
- Higher cost and more maintenance. Sand refills periodically and the surface settles over time if the base is not compacted correctly.
How we decide with you
- Use: grilling and mingling is fine for anything. Great Danes make us lean to pavers.
- Shape: curves and organic shapes reduce paver cutting and often favor stamped concrete.
- Pads: pavers are convenient when equipment pads must be re-laid for service access.
If both designs turn out equal inside your budget, ask how the surface is replaced in fifteen years. That usually answers it.
