Why Concrete Beats Asphalt for Your Driveway

October 11, 2026 2 min read by AKL Concrete

A driveway is one of the few surfaces you touch every single day. Choosing between concrete and asphalt usually comes down to one question: how much do you want to spend fixing it later?

Strength that holds up

A properly poured concrete driveway resists rutting, gouging and the softening that asphalt suffers in the summer heat. It also handles the sun far better. Where asphalt fades toward grey and needs sealing every two to three years, concrete keeps its color and its line for decades.

The base is the real project

The slab you see is only the last step. Before we pour, we take care of:

  • Excavation. Removing the old surface, roots and unstable soil.

  • Compact graded gravel, laid in lifts and compacted so the slab cannot settle.
  • Formwork set to a minimum 2% fall so water runs away from the house.
  • Reinforcement with rebar or wire mesh, plus clean control joints.

Concrete is not expensive. Correcting concrete is.

Finishes that match your home

A broom finish gives you grip on a slope. A stamped or exposed aggregate finish can copy stone, brick or slate and make the driveway read as part of the architecture. Either way, we control the curing so you do not end up with random cracks or a soft surface.

What you get

Every driveway we pour starts with a free estimate, includes a written scope, and ends with a walkthrough and care instructions. If you have been patching an asphalt driveway every spring, send us a photo and we will show you what a concrete replacement involves.
