From Base to Finish: How a Driveway Gets Poured

September 20, 2026 2 min read by AKL Concrete

People ask us what actually happens on site. Here is the sequence on a typical driveway replacement.

Day 1: demo and layout

We remove the old surface, mark the layout, and set the slope so water leaves the house. Forms are set and staked, and then the base is where the real work is.

Base and reinforcement

  • Gravel is placed in lifts and compacted.
  • Rebar or mesh is set on chairs, so it sits inside the concrete and not on the soil.
  • A couple of things are clear before we pour.

Pour day

The truck backs up, and the crew works the concrete. Screed, float, edge, then the finish. Expansion joints and score lines get cut while it is still setting.

Cure time is not optional. Concrete reaches strength as it dries.

Finishing and cure

We keep the surface moist and protected for the first days, then return to open and test. The driveway is safe to walk on within a day and ready for vehicles after about a week.

What you get

  • Cleaned edges and trim.
  • Cut lines squared to the property.
  • A clear aftercare sheet.

If you are considering a replacement, send a photo and approximate dimensions. We can usually give a range before the site visit.
